Buyer guide

Measure the room. Then measure the route.

A furniture measurement is useful only when it is compared with the room, the paths around it, and every opening between the entrance and its final position.

1. Sketch the room.

Draw a simple top-down outline. Mark wall lengths, windows, doors and their swing, closets, outlets, vents, fixed features, and the open paths to adjacent spaces. The sketch does not need to be to scale if every measurement is clearly labelled.

2. Record the usable area.

Measure the wall or floor area the new piece may occupy. Then note the clear space needed for walking, sitting, opening drawers or doors, and using the room as intended.

3. Trace the route in.

Measure the entry door, interior doors, hallways, stair width and height, landings, elevators if relevant, and every tight turn. Include trim, handles, rails, and fixed obstructions that reduce the opening.

4. Take context photos.

Take one wide photo from the doorway, one from the opposite corner, and one of each tight point on the route. Keep a familiar measured object in the notes rather than trying to estimate scale from a photo alone.

5. Confirm the exact item.

Before purchase, compare your notes with the exact dimensions and orientation of the item. Ask which dimensions include removable parts and confirm current delivery or pickup options, fees, timing, policies, and responsibilities directly with the showroom.
